Karen Pirtz Taylor
Ms. Taylor is mother of two special education children who have attended public,
private and home schools, and are both now in high school.
She has taught child development and psychology classes at the community college level and taught math and science
at the high school level. She worked at the California School for the Blind and Deaf and did extensive tutoring during her college and high school years.
She is a member of the California State Bar and was employed as an attorney for eight years in both the private and federal sectors. She has extensive experience with IEP teams, psychiatric and residential institutions, psychologists, psychiatrists, and appeals to the College Board for testing accommodations.
John Frye
Mr. Frye worked with general and special education children in a local public school system for 30 years. He participated in the writing and implementation of many IEPs. Mr. Frye works with the Brownley Law Group as a consultant on issues concerning the public schools.
James Hardcastle
Mr. Hardcastle has a broad and varied background. After retiring
as a journalist he worked as a special education teacher in Fairfax
County Public Schools. Mr. Hard castle is licensed in Virginia to
teach students with learning and emotional disabilities K-12. He
has written and negotiated numerous IEPs. He has also gained
valuable insight into services available in the community by serving as
a director of the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board and the
National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.
JoAnn Skinner
Ms. Skinner has degrees in both Political Science and German.
Prior to working with us she worked in international banking and
marketing for over 20 years in New York City, DC, Maryland and
Virginia. Ms. Skinner has experience with children with
disabilities in the special education field, ranging from severely
disabled children to those with relatively moderate disabilities.
Ms. Skinner is also skilled at navigating the intricacies of the
Medicaid system. Ms. Skinner excels at relationship building and
creating a cooperative atmosphere between families and schools that
often leads to superior educational results.
Lou Nuzzo
Mr. Nuzzo has been a member of the Virginia State Bar since 1988. He is
an experienced Mediator and is the former Director of the Family
Mediation Program at The Northern Virginia Mediation Service. He is a
member of the Virginia Mediation Network as well as the Alternate
Dispute Resolution Section of the Virginia State Bar.
Mr. Nuzzo is
also a Parent Educator and Education Trainer who conducts a number of
court ordered and General Family Education classes for Fairfax County.
He participates in the training of Classroom Instructors throughout
Virginia. He is a former Special Education Ombudsman for Fairfax County
Public Schools where he advised parents on their rights and options in
the area of special education.
